Spring equinox is in less than two weeks and Mother Nature has begun her epic shake-up!
Now would be a good time to take stock of the ruts you might have inadvertently fallen into this winter. I’m not talking about the kind of ruts made by your snow tires, but ruts like wearing too much black, Netflix bingeing, low energy, hanging out with the same people, working too many hours, or eating too many sweets.
These ruts may have made for a nice little cocooned winter existence, but maybe life’s now starting to feel kind of stale and robotic. I’m wondering if there’s a place deep down inside you longing for growth, possibility…to come ALIVE?If so, I’m afraid you’re going to have to break out of that damn cozy cocoon. After all, you can’t expand your life if you don’t actually do anything different… Do what you’ve always done, get what you have always gotten. You, like Mother Nature, need to start shaking things UP.
I can picture you right about now squinting at me from your winter carb coma saying: “But that sounds way too hard”.
Yes, shaking things up can be challenging, but I’m not asking you to quit your job and go walk the Camino trail. What I propose you start with is just a bite-sized, but powerful little experiment…Unpredictable Day!
It’s simple… Today be unpredictable in some of your everyday choices.
If you’ve been dressing in dark colors, go for a bright yellow or red today. If you usually wear your hair up, wear it down. If you drive the same way to work every day, try a different way. Brush your teeth with your opposite hand, walk around naked in your house for the evening, cold call that big potential client, eat something different for lunch, or choose a different magazine or news site to read than usual.
Do stuff that is out of character for you… If you’re always serious, be a little silly. Or if you’re always silly, try having a really serious interaction today. If you always answer your emails right away, let them wait for a day! Try a little something new sexually that you’ve never done before. Go to bed or get up at a different time. Take a cue from George Costanza on Seinfeld when he starts to turn his life around by doing the opposite of what he would normally do.
Doing anything outside of your normal routine can start breaking up that hardness and inflexibility that’s built up over the winter (or longer). Shaking up the little things starts priming the pump for bigger life shifts!
After even just one day of shaking things up, I’ve seen folks suddenly get the sense that they are more alive and they CAN change their life.
Mother Nature’s shaking it up, whaddya say you join the party?!
