Hello Dear One!
I’m here to suggest you do something radical today…make this a “Sacred Sunday”.
Hear me out…Think about how we’re being constantly bombarded these days… Texts, emails, and phone calls never stop. Social media exposes us to the daily minutia of hundreds, sometimes thousands of friends and acquaintances. With computers everywhere from our bedrooms to our pockets, the average person now takes in information equivalent to 175 newspapers each day.
WE NEED A BREAK!!!
So, in my life I try to observe something I call “Sacred Sundays”. For me, that doesn’t necessarily mean going to church or a meditation hall (although that can be awesome!), but it has these general parameters: staying offline for the day (except for a quick check-in with my Life Rebooters if I’m in the middle of a program), not scheduling anything that I can’t easily move or get out of (even the “fun” stuff), not doing anything that feels like an “obligation”, and sometimes even having a morning or afternoon of complete silence.
I have to admit that even though I yearn for this, it isn’t easy. It’s hard to ignore the piling up emails, it’s hard to say no to that meeting that “just can’t be scheduled any other time”, and it’s hard not to try to fit the people I love into every nook and cranny of my weekend…but I must.
You see, it’s only in having SPACE that I can truly come home to myself. As writer May Sarton said:
“I am here alone for the first time in weeks, to take up my “real” life again at last. That is what is strange– that friends, even passionate love, are not my real life unless there is time alone in which to explore and to discover what is happening or has happened.”
It’s when I unplug that I can catch up with my life — process the pains of the week, absorb the lessons, and cultivate appreciation. It’s only in the silence that I can distinguish the murmurings of my inner voice from my stomach growling. :p
If you’re a parent or an entrepreneur or just have a lot of shit to do ;), it’s easy to believe that any time you take to relax or meditate or be silent is time that could/should be used elsewhere. Think, though, about what happens when you are constantly rushing, doing things out of obligation, and always putting the needs of others ahead of yours… You get cranky, fatigued, sick, careless, resentful, or all of the above. And just so we’re clear…having a grumpy, zombie-like martyr around isn’t doing anybody any favors.
Instead, you could just drop out for a day (or even just a few dedicated hours) each week and become much more lovingly and powerfully present in your life for the other six.
Here are some forms your “Sacred Sunday” could come in:
– turning your smartphone off for the day
– saying “no” to any appointments or obligations
– declaring a morning of silence in which you don’t communicate
– staying offline for the whole day
– spending time alone in nature
– doing a tech-free evening in which you stay away from your computer, phone, and maybe even the TV and iPod
Keep in mind that even an HOUR today dedicated to down-time can open up some vital space.
Just a warning… If you have deeply ingrained habits of constant stimulation and busyness, you may find yourself feeling deeply uncomfortable with the space and silence at first. If that happens, just breathe right into this feeling and remind yourself that in order to feel ALIVE, you must learn to be PRESENT again.
So, my friend, I send you love as you head into your own “Sacred Sunday”…may this be the last thing you read before kicking your butt offline today.xo, Kimberly
