“Activism is my rent for living on this planet.” – Alice Walker
I see all too well how this world aches, but I still firmly believe we have the power and love to help heal it.
One of my personal missions is to get those who are cultivating their best life to also actively help create a better world. Many folks believe they should wait to be of service until they have lots of time or money or the cure for cancer. I believe it’s important to start being of service every day wherever you are, with whatever you’ve got, and to begin in small, manageable ways — signing an online petition, shoveling your neighbor’s walk, joining a community committee, getting informed about issues on the other side of the world, taking your kids for a bike ride, donating even just $5 to a cause that you care about, or smiling at everyone you pass on the street. Make a commitment to do one small act of service a day and keep track of your daily actions to make yourself accountable. By the way, embracing your interconnectedness with everyone and everything on this planet and taking action from this place not only has the power to change the world, it has immense power to change you.
“A kind deed a day, like little drops of rain, Makes a mighty ocean and a gracious nation.” ~ Lin Hsiu Nei
I also work to help those who are already being of service to go inward and do this important work from their most powerful, loving, and inspired center. I believe self-care is a very important tool as an activist — as they say on airplanes: “You need to apply your own oxygen mask before assisting others”. I think we are a far more effective influence in this world when we come from a place of connection, love, courage, and joy.
Personally, I’m a fierce supporter of soul awakenings, the planet, social justice, creativity, human potential, and love. My especial devotion is as an animal protection advocate. My love for animals led me to become vegetarian in 1996 and eventually a vegan and animals activist in the field of farmed animals. I’ve fronted and helped coordinate many animal protection initiatives. I was the campaign co-creator, co-coordinator, and spokesperson for the “Why love one but eat the other?” ad series that has run on transit systems across Canada and has created an international pro-veg ripple. I was also one of the founding board members for Mercy For Animals Canada whose undercover investigations into factory farming have been gotten international media and inspired Canadians to extend their circle of compassion to farmed animals. Currently, I am pleased to be doing work with Animal Justice Canada, a charity dedicated to advancing public knowledge of animal practices and preventing the abuse and killing of animals through the enforcement of existing laws, as well as the Vegetarian Food Bank which provides cruelty-free, eco-conscious, and healthy foods to those in need.
As we undergo our own personal transformations, let’s have that momentum flow out to help transform the world around us. Each month in my “Karma Action” below, I will make a simple call to action for being of service in this precious world of ours. Let the lovevolution begin!
