Every couple of years I go through my own Life Reboot Program as a body/mind/spirit tune-up, and this summer is one of those times!
Yesterday was all about seeing how my ideal values are holding up in my everyday life…and I thought you might want to check in on this with me…
For starters, I want you to think about one of your deepest held values in life… Maybe it’s love, activism, peace, family, joy, freedom, creativity, or…? Now I want you to think about how much of a priority you’ve made this value in the last 24 hours?
You see, we all have things we deeply value on the big picture level, but the relentless demands and values of the world and others can often move us away from our inner truth. Instead of our lives reflecting our ideal value of joy, we might find that guilt is what’s really driving the show. Or instead of cultivating love daily, perhaps the quest for financial security is actually taking up far more bandwidth.
I think you’ll find when your life is out of alignment with your values, you experience a deep nagging feeling that doesn’t go away. Whereas, living your values creates a deep sense of inner harmony.
So, here’s an exercise that will help you see clearly how in alignment you are with your most deeply held values, so you can make some adjustments if need be…
Grab some post-it notes and a page of paper. Think about your ideal values – the qualities that mean the most to you in the deepest part of who you are. They might be qualities like passion, community, happiness, power, compassion, being present, adventure, integrity, pleasure, knowledge, being of service, or vitality. Then, write down your top 5 ideal values (one per post-it note) and order them on the left-hand of the page starting with the most important value at the top.
Next, do a right-hand column on that same page with post-its reflecting the top 5 values/qualities that are currently taking up the most space in your life right now. This list might contain a whole other set of qualities like security, resentment, fame, comfort, attractiveness, solitude, vindication, money, or people-pleasing.
Be brutally honest here… For example, family might be your top ideal value, but if most of your time and energy goes toward your career, then productivity or prestige or security might actually be the value you’re most practising in your life.
A good rule of thumb in determining your practical values: if somebody was looking at your life from the outside, what would they say your values are?
When both columns are done, compare them and determine how different your ideal values are from your day-to-day practising values. For example, being of service may be at the top of your ideal list, but if you’ve been partying non-stop, pleasure or escape might actually be at the top of your practising list. That’s a pretty big discrepancy (a fun discrepancy, but a big one nevertheless) that could explain why things have felt not quite right in your life.
If your response to the discrepancies between the two lists is: “Well, this way of living is only temporary”, the next thing I’m going to share with you is very important for you to take in… The way you live your days inevitably turns into the way you live your life.
So, let’s start TODAY to put your deepest values back in the driver’s seat of your life.
Pick one ideal value from the left-hand column and choose one small way to strengthen that value in your life today.
If love is a top ideal value but doesn’t even show up on your practicing values list, choose an action today like emailing a loved one to tell them how much they mean to you, spending an extra five minutes just looking into the eyes of your sweetheart, cuddling with your kids or fur kids, or saying some sweet words to yourself in the mirror. If freedom is the value you want to cultivate, take a walk in nature at your lunch break, express something important you’ve been holding back, or dance wildly in your living room this evening.
